Economic Empowerment & Employment Services

Career Connections:

Helps individuals overcome significant barriers to employment, leading to sustainable careers.

  • Focus: Equipping individuals in our transitional shelters with the skills and confidence for economic independence and permanent housing.
  • Approach: This program goes beyond basic job placement. It aims to ignite belief in a better future by providing motivational skills, comprehensive job search knowledge, and strategies for career advancement and long-term self-sufficiency.
  • Skills Development: Training in essential "soft skills" valued by employers (e.g., punctuality, understanding employer priorities, teamwork) and practical work habits. Emphasis on the "exchange with abundance" principle – rewarding extra effort.
  • Personalized Support: Clients meet individually with an Employment Specialist to assess skills, interests, and experience.
  • Group Workshops: Held twice weekly (Tuesdays 6:30-7:30 PM for underemployed; Wednesdays 2:30-4:00 PM for unemployed) covering practical job attainment and retention skills, sometimes featuring guest speakers.
  • Employer Partnerships: The Employment Specialist acts as a liaison between clients and employers, fostering relationships with companies.

Bridges Out of Poverty / Getting Ahead Program

  • Focus: Empowering families and individuals living in poverty to build resources and achieve economic stability by understanding and navigating different societal frameworks.
  • Philosophy: Helps participants transition from a "poverty culture" mindset to understanding the "middle-class culture" rules and skills often necessary for success in school and the workplace. It emphasizes building diverse resources (financial, educational, spiritual, mental, physical, etc.).

Program Structure:

  • Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World: An 18-week workshop where participants identify areas for change and explore 11 key resources for building a bridge out of poverty.
  • Staying Ahead with Resources: Ongoing monthly presentations and workshops for "Getting Ahead" graduates and current participants, featuring Community Resource Partners who provide expert education, practical tools, and mentoring to support sustained progress.

Pathway of Hope

Focus: A strengths-based case management approach helping families identify and obtain the resources needed to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty by setting and achieving short and long-term goals.

Nourishment & Basic Needs

Food Pantry: Provides essential groceries and fresh produce to Broward County residents facing food insecurity. Every Thursday, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM, via a convenient, contactless drive-thru pickup service.

Community Dinner: Offers free, nutritious daily dinners to anyone in the community in need daily from 4:30 PM - 5:15 PM.

Housing Stability & Support

Rent & Mortgage Assistance: To prevent homelessness, we offer one-time financial assistance to help households cover a month's rent or mortgage payment during times of crisis.

Care to Share: Electric utility assistance in partnership with Florida Power & Light (FPL).
